there went the bride

This is long overdue, but for friends not on Facebook, here are a few pictures from Jacob and mine wedding in June. It was a lovely day, though probably the chilliest one all week. That was fine. It didn't rain and the setting was beautiful. The food was amazing Hawaiian food from Hawaiian Breeze, a restaurant in Seattle that I cannot recommend enough. The cake was made by a professor in the geography department here. A woman of many talents. And my advsior here at UO had a chat with my dad that seemed to convince him that the work I do is actually worthwhile. Certainly family will worry about me going, but I think my dad feels a little better about the whole thing. Hopefully he'll stop calling the embassy in Dar es Salaam and sending the Marines after me while I am in the city.

These first pictures are from the rehearsal and dinner.
Here's us lining up for the processional. The bridal party has left and I am explaining to Isabel when she is supposed ot go and what she is supposed to do. She rocked it.

Since we did a few run-throughs, she was very helpful and picked up her flower petals so she would have enough to do it again. She thought that was very important.

Two bridesmaids in what I am sure is a very serious conversation about logistics.

I grabbed my mom at the last second to do the walk down the isle. She didn't seem to think it was necessary... but I'm glad we did it.

Waiting... Practicing the ceremony. Drinking beer. Our officiant was Jacob's best friend, Eric. He did so much work! And he was very sweet and it was a lovely ceremony that he wrote up.

I guess we didn't get a picture, but our practice kiss was a clinking of the beer glasses.

Cousin-in-law, cousin and brother in law. Don't they look excited?!

After the rehearsal. This was a fun evening. It finally felt like it was all going to happen. Family stress melted away and everything was coming together. I gave an impromptu speech. I'd never been to a real rehearsal dinner before so I didn't know what was expected... Oh well.

My sister (guess which one), my niece and my friend Megan. Megan showed up the day before and was so much help!

Here's Jacob's step-mom grilling. I really need to send her this picture.

And now for the wedding.
I love this picture. Eric practicing the day of the wedding.

Right after I came outside (pics were before the wedding) and then a great shot of Tracy and her daughter Isabel.

When the photographer said "act natural," I could think of only one response. And then there is probably the cutest picture of the entire wedding.

Here is our portrait shot and then one of me leading Isabel down to where we were taking some pics. She was soooo excited to 'get married' and that our dresses matched.

The bridal party and the bride's family, the groom's dad's family and groom's mom's family

A very special moment between sisters

And probably the other coolest picture to come out of all this chaos.

Here's some chaos with the photographer as my sister and Alexa stick a daisy in my hair.

Here's Kate (the wonderous creature who handles our flowers and my family) and Amy, the behavioral geographer and Jacob's advisor who also makes wedding cakes.

Dad and my cousin Will hanging out inside prior to the ceremony. Me wandering around in a daze waiting to go out.

One of the few pictures I have with Terri!!Again, biding time until I go outside...

Here's some pics from the ceremony. Yes, we've all made fun of how Jacob's hand looks! And yes, Isabel rocked the flowers again! Though she did become concerned when she saw that I was stepping on them.

After the ceremony. Making sure that thing gets signed.

What tent looked like after the ceremony when the tables were set up.

Waiting to be introduced: Leslie and Jacob (I remain Leslie McLees, but the way)

Did I mention how amazing the food was? I am probably trying to reiterate this to my sister here, but it looks like we're about to throw down...

Jason's toast, the script of which we have. It really has (turn to Leslie, raise glass) written in it! So cute.

Not to be outdone, my sister brakes out in the "Sound of Music"
Just kidding. I just think it's a funny picture. It was a nice speech.

Cutting the cake with a very curious niece...

First dance. How many bad pictures we have of this...

Dancing with dad... he spent a lot of time talking about all the nice things people, especially my dissertation advisor, said about me. He seemed surprised that so many people liked us (!), but comforted that we have support for our academic pursuits here in Eugene.

Then mom and Jacob. I really like this picture.

Other random pics: me giving my advisor that look like: what in the world are you going to say next. Funny that my dad talked a lot about him while dad and I danced, and then Shaul talked a lot about my dad a few minutes later.

Terrilyn! And Jay and Caitlin! And the Marcus clan, Mr Nick and Mike and Laura.

Here's a final picture of Isabel dancing with her dad. And showing off a bit for the camera, I am sure.

Whew, you made it to the end. I'm glad we were able to share these picture with you.

blushing is cool again!

Just had to post this article about blushing. Basically, even though it's embarrassing, it can sooth social situations because it shows people that I care. How nice! Though it doesn't really explain the nervous in public or at bridal showers thing. But I guess that would just be an extension of 'I care' about the situation I am in and that I want everyone to gain from it. Hmmm. I must say, I feel rather validated.

the the impotence of proofreading

This one is definitely going on my next course website. How many times have I been grading papers and had many laughs at the funny typos that people make? I do it to, so does everyone. But some students make so many... if they only knew how much entertainment their TAs had when they read their papers.

what teachers make

I'm going to post this to my next class. Students who feel entitled to an A because they show up and do the work need to see this. Students who think summer sessions or sections taught by grad students and so the classes are easy As need to see this. We want students to learn, to think and to learn to think critically. We don't care if they are republicans or democrats. We want them to do more than fill in bubbles on a scan-tron sheet. And yeah, we actually care that the amount of effort we put into teacher is rarely put into learning. College isn't about learning more facts, it's about learning how to use them in ways productive to society. So quit freakin' asking if 'this' is going to be on the test.

I think this man is my new hero.

best bridal shower game EVER!

The woman who is throwing me a bridal show in Portland in May sent me this video. She promises this won't be one of our games, but I wouldn't put it past the Blair ladies up there. I didn't believe her that it would be very funny.

My goodness, it's way too funny. I wish we could have done this at my sister's shower. What do you think, Tracy? Would it have flied with that group? Remember who was there and just imagine how much more hysterical this would have been...

moonwalk

I want to save this and play it in a class. Some people think the crazy science lady ruins the video. I disagree. She makes this video all the wonderful glory that it is.

This one is for my sister. For all the times dancing in front of the glass doors to the Thriller album.
